About the event
More than 7 months into the War on Gaza, the death toll among Palestinian civilians reached, so far, 38 times that of the Israeli ones during the Hamas attack of 7 October. How do you frame this war? What kind of moral reasoning and moral clarity could one have?
In Norway, demonstrations calling for ceasefire have been frequent in the city streets, several Norwegian universities have stopped their co-operation with Israeli universities and other actors are also sanctioning Israel. Sociologists both analyse the situation on Gaza as well as related issues as war, peace, conflict resolution and violence, and have personal views on the issue. This event will first present a talk by professor Sari Hanafi on the war in Gaza, following a discussion with Hanafi and two Norwegian social scientists, Kristian Berg Harpviken and Hege Hermansen about interpretations of the war, how the future prospects appear for the Palestinians, and what activities are needed.
In Hanafis talk, he will frame it as a passage from spacio-cide (targeting land for the purpose of rendering it unlivable to foster the inevitable ‘voluntary’ transfer of the Palestinian population) to genocide. Beyond analyzing the current contours of the war, he will theorize the politics of denial in some Western media and academia, and the officially sanctioned cancel culture surrounding the War. He will end up highlighting some scenarios (from new Nakba to prospect of a fair political solution) that all will induce a game changer and paradigm shift not only for the Palestinian-Israeli conflict but beyond.
Speakers
Hanafi will speak for 30 minutes on the topic of spaciocide to genocide, followed by a panel consisting of the above speakers.
